Hello, dear friends!
It feels like a lifetime since I last had the chance to sit down and share my thoughts with you. Life has been an incredible whirlwind, full of new challenges, opportunities, and changes—both professionally and personally. If you’ve been following along with my journey, you’ll know that education has always been at the heart of everything I do. From my early days in the classroom to the many hats I’ve worn since, the passion for teaching and learning has remained a constant, though the paths I’ve taken have evolved over time.
So, where to begin with the updates? Let’s dive right in.
A New Role: Faculty Teaching and Learning Consultant
One of the most significant changes in my professional life has been the transition from being primarily in the classroom to taking on a new role as a faculty teaching and learning consultant in higher education. This shift to support faculty in their own teaching journey has been both exciting and a bit daunting—after all, the classroom has been my home for so many years. But as with all journeys, growth often requires stepping out of familiar spaces and embracing new challenges.
In my new role, I work closely with faculty members across various departments, helping them to refine their teaching strategies, integrate technology more effectively, and develop student-centered approaches that resonate with today’s learners. This work allows me to draw upon my years of classroom experience while also exploring new pedagogical approaches that can enhance learning at the university level. It’s been a rewarding experience to support fellow educators in their quest to create dynamic, engaging learning environments. The joy I once found in directly teaching students has now expanded to include the joy of helping other educators succeed.
This transition has also provided me with a broader perspective on education. Seeing how different disciplines approach teaching, and understanding the unique challenges faced by instructors at the collegiate level, has deepened my appreciation for the diversity of teaching methods and the importance of flexibility in pedagogy. It’s a role that constantly pushes me to stay current with educational trends and technologies, ensuring that I can provide the best possible support to my colleagues.
The Pumpkin is a Senior!
On the personal front, time has flown by, and my “pumpkin” is now a senior in high school! It’s hard to believe that we’re already at this stage—college visits, application essays, and all the emotions that come with this significant milestone. As a parent, it’s been a rollercoaster of pride, nostalgia, and a bit of anxiety, too. Watching my baby boy grow into a thoughtful, curious, and independent young adult has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
This year is filled with “lasts”—the last first day of high school, the last homecoming, the last season of football/track/everything. But it’s also a year of new beginnings as we look ahead to what’s next. I’ve tried to savor every moment, knowing how quickly this chapter will close and a new one will begin. It’s a bittersweet time, but also incredibly exciting to see him ready to take on the world.
A Doctoral Journey: Embracing Educational Technology
In the midst of all these changes, I’ve also embarked on a new academic journey of my own—pursuing a Doctor of Education in Technology program. This decision stemmed from my long-standing passion for integrating technology into the classroom in ways that enhance learning and make education more accessible, engaging, and effective for all students. The world of educational technology is constantly evolving, and I’ve always believed in the power of technology to transform education.
My hope is these studies will challenge me in new ways, pushing me to think critically about how we use technology in education and how we can do so more mindfully. It’s not just about using the latest tools or platforms, but about understanding how these technologies can truly meet the needs of the whole student. Whether we’re talking about elementary students just beginning their educational journey, middle schoolers navigating the complexities of adolescence, high school students preparing for the future, or college students honing their passions and skills—technology, when used thoughtfully, can play a crucial role in supporting their growth. I’m eager to see where this journey will lead and how I can bring these new insights back into my work as an educator and consultant.
Continuing Passions: Joy in Teaching and a Student-Centered Approach
Despite all the changes in my professional and personal life, some things remain constant. My passion for teaching is as strong as ever, and in addition to the full time day job, I am still teaching university classes. I believe deeply in the power of a student-centered classroom—one where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. This philosophy has always guided my work, whether I was in the elementary, middle, high school, or college classroom, and it continues to do so in my current role.
Technology is a tool that, when used thoughtfully, can amplify the student-centered approach. It allows us to tailor learning experiences to individual needs, foster collaboration, and engage students in ways that were previously unimaginable. But it’s also about more than just technology. It’s about addressing the needs of the whole student—academically, socially, and emotionally. This holistic approach is something I’ve always advocated for, and it remains at the core of my educational philosophy.
As I continue this journey, both as an educator and a doctoral student, I am more committed than ever to exploring how we can create learning environments that truly support and inspire every student. Whether I’m working with faculty to refine their teaching practices or diving into the latest research on educational technology, my goal is always the same: to find joy in teaching and to help others do the same.
Looking Ahead
As I look to the future, I’m filled with anticipation for what’s to come. There are new challenges ahead, both in my professional role and in my doctoral studies, but I’m ready to embrace them with the same enthusiasm that has guided me thus far. And, of course, there’s the excitement of watching the Pumpkin take those final steps toward adulthood.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these updates with you and to continue exploring the ever-evolving world of education together. Here’s to new beginnings, continued learning, and finding joy in every step of the way.
Until next time,
Gabi
